Pistachio the homeless husky

Pistachio, a 15 year old Siberian Husky mix. She was a street dog for 8 years.

Pistachio came to us five years ago from the Santa Monica Animal Shelter. Shelter staff informed us that Pistachio was a frequent “guest” at the shelter because her owner was a local homeless man who lived on the streets. Unfortunately, the homeless man would often get incarcerated and Pistachio would be sent to the shelter. The staff was very familiar with her. Sadly, her owner was sent to prison permanently and the shelter reached out to our sanctuary in hopes of rescuing her. We accepted.

She was in poor health due to her inconsistent diet of leftover human junk food. Her coat and her teeth in in poor condition, her energy was low and her ears were down. We slowly introduced a grain free dry food, glucosamine, and omega 3 oils and saw an instant improvement in her fur and her energy. It took her almost a full year to be rehabilitated to normal status.
